What happened to fall?

I just ran to the corner shop to get some milk. I got a few looks since I was in a short-sleeve sweater and sandals without socks. I tried to defend myself that I wasn’t cold, but I have to confess, it is a bit chilly outside! My “fall” clothes are falling to the wayside. Bummer.

Well time to go back to looking for our spatula. My husband’s convinced my son took it. It must be in a cupboard somewhere…

Butter

Just in case anyone out there is looking for butter (AND CREAM) – the best place I’ve found is Carefour. Future-Mall is far from where I live, Beiguo was incredibly expensive, the WonderMall’s butter was rancid (don’t get butter in paper packing, always go for the foil!). I haven’t seen cream around in a few weeks. Basically, we need some more foreign import ingredients. I get cheese online:) Cheaper and better quality. Anyways, just some food info. Happy eating!

Culture bo-bo’s

Well after many months, I’m finally updating again.  I lost my password!  And I changed my email address so I couldn’t recover it.  What a pain!  Anyways, I’m connected again and wondering what to blog about.

Maybe I’ll write about some of my bo-bo’s lately.

Cultural Bo-bo’s

  1. I was outside the other day with my son and a few toys.  Here in China, when a child wants to play with another kid’s toys, what you should do is say “Ohh here, you play with it!” (and take the toy out of your child’s hands to give to someone else).  Now that wouldn’t really work with my son, so I don’t go down that road. Rather I let him play with his toy and try to distract the other child with something else.  Yesterday I pretended I didn’t understand the not-so-subtle comments directed towards me.  Translated to mean:  “this little boy doesn’t want to let you play with his car.  He’s bigger than you but he won’t let you play with them.  Maybe he can’t see you want to play with it.”  Improvised a bit, but that was the gist of it.  Sorry, but my son has healthy lungs and  he will scream if I take his car away!
  • Fall just seemed to arrive yesterday. I don’t know where it came from.  I was enjoying my air conditioning and then suddenly, I went outside and was ALMOST cold.  ALMOST.  My little man didn’t get the memo that in China you don’t eat ice-cream once it’s ALMOST cold.  Today we went to buy some and the woman looked as us with surprise. She had to totally unpack her freezers, unlock them and then pretend to not be shocked to see me buy my little man ice-cream.  What can I say, he LOVES IT.
  • We have a little scooter for him.  A girl was trying to ride on it when he came over and wanted it back.  One more culture bo-bo, I let him ride on it and told her she could ride on it later.  Let’s just say it wasn’t just the child that was upset.  Memo… I’m not a mean person, I just sometimes do things differently and although perhaps they interpret them as mean, I would defend my actions as trying to help my son learn how to share, be fair and enjoy life.
  • Well I guess I could keep going, but I might get even more misunderstood:)  So I’ll end it here for today.

Hope to hear from you all soon and will write a LOT quicker!

Mother’s day

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there!  Hope you felt appreciated and loved!

I’m back! Long time, no post

Hi everyone, well it’s been ages since I’ve posted anything.  I got out of blogging and then when I wanted to start again, I couldn’t figure out all of my admin stuff.  Anyways, it’s been ages!

And I’ve missed blogging about so many things like: Spring Festival, what Christmas was like over here, the start of Spring, etc.  I enjoyed all of those times, loved the fire-works that happened for each holiday (it was like a month solid of bangs and booms during Chinese New Year!!) and now everything is quiet.

I really like Shijiazhuang and the people here.  And my Chinese…. ????,????. :)   It’s getting better, but I try to focus on oral Chinese (more power to you all who are writing, reading and whizzing through your Chinese characters!)

Right now things seem pretty calm around here.  It’s getting hot.  Well, at least by my standards.  I’m usually out in a t-shirt, but most other people are still wearing their long-underwear!!

I’ve been exploring more of the city.  Hey, I’ve got a GREAT location for you all to check out.  I’m usually pretty busy, but I also once in a while I also enjoy getting out and seeing new things.  So for those who enjoy hot springs… check out Pingshan.  We went to the White Deer Hot Spring area.  There wasn’t much information about it on the web, but we heard that there were hot springs around here and wanted to have a look.  You can get a bus from the North Station and basically, it’ll take you right there.  The White Deer HotSpring Center is the biggest hot spring area in Pingshan (and also the most expensive!), but if you’re going there, it’s worth it to go there as opposed to the other smaller places.

The bus ride to Pinghan is about an hour and a half.  You can stay overnight at the Hotspring place.  If you do the math, it can actually end up being less than going for the day (if there’s more than one of you that would share a hotel room).

I’d put up photos, but I didn’t take any.  But it was great!  Really nice, relaxing hot springs.  A HUGE complex and all the free bread, juice and fruit you can eat on the second floor (once you change into their mandatory white shorts and shirts).  We went on a holiday, so there were quite a few people, but everyone was very polite and we got to practice some of our Chinese and hang out relaxing in the pools all day (and eating bread when we were hungry!)

Time to go.  Until next post.

English Corner in Shijiazhuang

Hi All, long-time no write.  Anyways, I’m curious to know if anyone wants to have an English corner.  I’m thinking (THINKING) about doing one, but not sure what interest there is out there.  Ideally, I’d want to schedule something weekly, but curious to know how any people are interested.  So if you’re in SJZ, Shijiazhuang, and want to practice your English or want to go to an English corner, leave a comment on this post so that I can keep track of numbers.  If I see that there’s substancial interest, I’ll plan out some details (where, when, etc.) and will let you know.
