Improving English / Chinese

Do you want to improve your English?

I get a lot of people asking for English classes.  If you’re a foreigner and here over the summer, there are MANY people looking for English tutors!  Basically, come ready to teach!  If you’re someone who wants to learn English, but your foreign friends are too busy to teach you, here is some advice.

A few tips

  • Offer to help them.  You can help them with little things, but you’ll also get a chance to practice your English.
  • Offer them Chinese food.  Most foreigners appreciate food and being away from their home country, they sometimes are at odds of what to cook.  It’s a great way to bless someone and then get to practice your English.
  • Invite your friend out for a coffee and then take the opportunity to practice your English.

Do you want to improve your Chinese?

Most foreigners in SJZ are probably here also learning Chinese.  You can do it!  There are highs and lows and it all takes time, but it will come.

A few tips

  • Hang out with Chinese friends
  • Practice speaking everyday (especially to people who can’t/won’t speak English to you
  • Study, study, study
  • Throw yourself into the language and use whatever you have: MAKE MISTAKES!

And finally.. if you’re a foreigner and are learning Chinese – be friendly to the rest of the foreigners:)  It won’t hinder your language learning to smile and say hi:)
